Marine Education Center: Community Outreach

The Marine Education Center at The Sands has been working to expand its community outreach programmes. To date, a total of 166 students and 27 teachers from local schools visited the center to learn all about Kenya’s incredible marine life and the importance of conservation.

Students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities with the center’s resident marine biologist and education manager. Students have enjoyed a turtle fact finding mission and conducted a beach clean survey to collect data on the rubbish they removed from the beach. The data is then collated and used for a school project.

A fun degradation game requires students to consider how long they think it takes different objects, such as bottle tops, fishnets, cardboard, tyres and cloth, to degrade. A school visit is rounded off with a special documentary screening of the movie ‘Oceans’, which is a big hit with students who often do not know how many animals are in the ocean and who have never seen a fish swim.

Many of the students who walk through the marine center’s doors are visiting the beach for the first time.

The local Conservation Education Society and the Marine Education Centre have funded the trips to give this unique opportunity to local school students who would otherwise miss out on a fantastic, far-reaching educational experience.

An ethical, sustainable approach to the natural and surrounding environment is embedded within The Sands’ philosophy.

We are delighted that our work in this area has been recognised at the Sustainable Tourism Africa Summit (STAS) 2019 Awards which acknowledges and rewards leadership for sustainable development in Africa.

The Sands at Nomad was nominated as a runner-up in the Innovative Waste Management for Sustainable Oceans category, for its waste management and sustainability project. Our ‘Thinking Green’ team, led by a dedicated Sustainability Manager, have turned waste into recyclable materials, collected waste from other local establishments, spearheaded beach clean-up days and fed free-range chickens on the Nomad farm organic vegetable waste from the Nomad kitchen

We aim to be a leading light for sustainable tourism practices on Kenya’s south coast and to help protect and conserve precious ocean life and make a difference to the local environment.

Making a Difference: HIV/Aids Awareness

The Sands strives to make a positive difference to both our immediate and wider environments.

It was with this aim in mind that Nomad invited a representative from the Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and Aids (KELIN), Esther Nelima, to give a series of special sensitisation training workshops to support and empower our staff.

HIV prevalence in Kwale County stands at 3.8% as per the 2018 HIV Estimate report, released in December 2018 by the National Aids Control Council (NACC), while stigma and discrimination against people living with and affected by HIV and Aids remains high, at 48% according to the national HIV and Aids summary report from the NACC.

The training took place over several days to allow all staff the opportunity to attend. It covered awareness on sexual health, STIs and HIV/Aids; signs, symptoms and methods of prevention; the importance of testing, early diagnoses and treatment as well as adherence and disclosure; and legal protection for people living with HIV and Aids through the HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act (HAPCA).

Ms. Nelima reported afterwards that it was clear few people were aware of the realities of HIV transmission, prevention and treatment and that, handled correctly, diagnoses does not have to be devastating or life-limiting. It is hoped that this initial intervention – the first of its kind in Diani – will help KELIN to reach more people within the tourism industry, to ensure those who do not know their HIV status are tested and linked to care and support and to prevent further deaths from HIV related illnesses in the tourism industry.

Individual counseling sessions to encourage more people to talk openly and freely regarding issues related to HIV and Aids followed the training sessions, with further training planned for 2019.

If a boat made entirely from recycled plastic and flip flops washed up and found on Kenya’s beautiful beaches sounds like child’s play, take a look at the incredible, pioneering Flipflopi. As the boat with a global conservation message returns from its historic maiden voyage along the coast to Zanzibar, we take a look back at the day the vessel was first unveiled in Diani, on 30 January 2019. Nomad hosted Flipflopi’s short stopover on its way to Tanzania from its island home of Lamu.

One of many highlights was a visit from young representatives of 7 schools in Diani and Kwale. The Marine Education Center at The Sands arranged for a total of 109 students and 16 teachers to celebrate the arrival of Flipflopi with several different activities, including visiting and boarding the Dhow, workshops with REEFolution, a tour of the center and some plastic bottle art. The founders of Flipflopi aim to inspire the next generation to take up the mantel of conserving our oceans and building a sustainable future.

A fantastic well done to the team at Flipflopi and local partner Kwale Plastics Plus for the launch of Flipflopi!
